To celebrate MaiJazz' 20-year anniversary and Stavanger2008, we intend to put on a grand, spectacular, untraditional mass mustering. In cooperation with Stavanger2008, the festival will invite 100 saxophone players to take part in the performance of "The Living Bridge", by British saxophonist Andy Sheppard.
The concert will take approximately 30 minutes, and will be performed outdoors in the City Centre of Stavanger, on Saturday, 10 May. The music has never been performed in Norway before, but has been played on two occasions in England last year with great success. Sheppard will make some adaptations of the music in connection with the performance in Stavanger.
The piece is composed to let saxophonists of all ages and levels of
proficiency take part. This means that the majority of the saxophone
players will be young people, culled from school bands, arts schools,
music education courses and local big bands. In addition we will need
to have some experienced, professional saxophone players.
